Managing Conflict and Difficult Conversations for Teachers and Support Staff in Schools

This specialised course is designed to provide school staff with the information and skills required to effectively intervene and facilitate positive outcomes when dealing with and resolving conflict in the school setting.

“Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict.”

Dorothy Thompson

Being confronted by angry, frustrated, and emotional individuals or groups can be challenging for staff. The nature of school communities means staff encounter frustrated, and at times, angry students and people throughout their day. Parents, caregivers and members of the broader community may also present challenges. Conflict can also develop between staff members.

This course is designed to equip school staff with skills to manage conflict among peers and handle stressful phone calls and face-to-face encounters with parents, caregivers, and members of the wider community.

The interactive 5-hour course will combine discussion of proven conflict management strategies with scenarios of school situations where conflicts occur. Participants will identify helpful and unhelpful behaviours that impact conflict management and be provided with a toolkit of strategies to use at work.

Participants will complete a conflict handling style survey – before or on the day of the course. This will provide a useful starting point for discussing how we react to conflict.
