Aged Care Team Leader Capability Program

The Aged Care Team Leader Capability Program incorporates the nationally recognised BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management and is designed specifically for emerging and current team leaders working in residential aged care.

This practical leadership development program is designed specifically for aged care organisations seeking to build leadership capability from within their workforce. 

It combines practical, workplace-focused leadership development with a nationally recognised qualification, equipping participants with the skills and confidence to lead people, support quality care and contribute to positive workplace outcomes.

Participants apply their learning directly in the workplace through practical activities aligned to the Aged Care Quality Standards, ensuring immediate relevance and measurable workplace impact. The result is confident leaders who positively influence workplace culture, team performance and resident outcomes. 

Throughout the program, participants will have the opportunity to develop practical skills in:

  • leading, supporting and motivating teams in aged care settings
  • strengthening communication and workplace relationships
  • managing difficult conversations
  • planning and coordinating day-to-day operations
  • supporting continuous improvement
  • improving communication and accountability
  • supporting compliance and quality outcomes.

This program is suitable for:

  • team leaders, coordinators and senior care staff
  • staff preparing to step into a leadership or supervisory role
  • organisations looking to strengthen frontline leadership capability and support high-quality care.

Option 1 – with potential employer funding for full-time employees

Up to $2,750 (GST free) 

  • Your employer will be invoiced the full fee of $5,250 and will then need to claim back the funding available to them. This will vary based on employment duration and part or full-time employment.
  • Each participant may also be eligible and able to claim back $2,500 in support funding, also based on employment duration and part or full-time employment.

Eligibility criteria 

A student (16 years or older and not enrolled at school) may be eligible for a subsidised training place if they live or work in South Australia, and:

  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or
  • are a permanent Australian resident, or
  • hold a state sponsored visa on a pathway to permanent residency.

Option 2 – without funding 

$5,250 (GST free) 
20% deposit may be required. Payment plans are available for individuals.


Please note: 

  • ASC Training & Development does not take payment of more than $1,500 from individuals in a single payment.
  • Nationally recognised training is GST free.
  • Upfront discount of $250 for full payment (reducing cost to $5,000).

There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification. Experience in an aged care setting is desirable.

To enrol in this course you must:

  • have English language and literacy skills sufficient to undertake study at Certificate IV level.
  • have good computer skills and be able to organise and manage files, edit documents, research information online, and record video on your phone, tablet or other device.
  • be able to commit 10-15 hours of your own time for each assessment (assessment tasks are completed between sessions).

The Aged Care Team Leader Capability Program incorporates BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management

The qualification has been contextualised for the aged care sector, with learning focused on the practical leadership skills required to lead teams, support quality care, strengthen communication, manage workplace risk, and contribute to positive organisational outcomes.

The program includes 12 nationally recognised units of competency across the following themes:

Leadership

  • BSBLDR411 Demonstrate leadership in the workplace
  • BSBLDR413 Lead effective workplace relationships
  • BSBXTW401 Lead and facilitate a team

Managing Self

  • BSBPEF401 Manage personal health and wellbeing
  • BSBPEF403 Lead personal development

Communication

  • BSBLDR412 Communicate effectively as a workplace leader
  • BSBCMM412 Lead difficult conversations
  • BSBXCM401 Apply communication strategies in the workplace

Operations

  • BSBOPS402 Coordinate business operational plans

Risk and Compliance

  • BSBWHS411 Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs
  • BSBOPS403 Apply business risk management processes
  • BSBAUD412 Work within compliance frameworks

Assessment

  • Assessment is competency based. You will be assessed as ‘Competent’, ‘Partially Complete’ or ‘Not Yet Competent’ for each unit of competency.
  • You will be invited to resubmit work until competency can be demonstrated.

On successful completion of the program, participants will be awarded the nationally recognised BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.

Participants will have developed practical leadership capabilities to:

  • lead and support teams in aged care settings
  • communicate effectively and manage difficult conversations
  • coordinate day-to-day workplace operations
  • contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
  • apply risk management and compliance processes
  • support safe, high-quality care aligned with the Aged Care Quality Standards.

This qualification may support career progression into a range of frontline leadership and supervisory roles within the aged care sector.

Course duration

  • Orientation session followed by 12 training days
  • Training days are scheduled 4-5 weeks apart over a period of 12-13 months
